who is your mentor

i started my first real job when i got out from law school. i realized that being a lawyer is not what i was meant to be, really. di kaya ng powers. I was lucky to be assigned in the human resource department of a telecom company and i felt luckier when i was placed under the direct supervision of an Asst. VP of Labor Relations.

He was strict. He didn't mince words to me when he felt I needed them. when he saw i fell short of his expectations, he would be direct with his disappointments. "Stupidity has no place in my office." i never took it personally but instead i worked harder to meet his expectations. Life itself was hard and it wont make any sense if he would sugarcoat his words.

when we attended meetings in hotel which were often, I always had this big document bag because his instructions included bringing my "office" (bond paper, clips, stapler, puncher, lots of pens and pencils, money etc). when i was dressed up inappropriately, he would not hesitate to give snide remarks. "Mukha kang kilyawan".

he taught me to be on my toes all the time. he would bring me to his meetings with the company bigwigs and even allowed me to talk to them. I remember one time, he sent me to the COO (Child of the Owner) who happened to be his best friend (couldn't recall why I was there), when she saw me, all she could tell was "Oh, you are Edmer's staff? Kawawa ka naman". :) it's either i looked so "basahan" to her (she was a ramp model) or i looked so stressed out and haggard.

he was from San Juan, Batangas and during light moments we would speak in our native punto (accent) while using the "strangest" words in the universe which only the two of us could understand.there were times when out of the blue he would ask me to go with him to Greenbelt (GB was not like what it is now) just to stroll around, "Tayo sa Greenbelt para mabawasan ang pagiging ulaga mo sa Makati." those moments were precious because there he would tell me bits and pieces of his life and career.

so why i am telling this now? perhaps because i see young and new employees in our company who have lots of potentials to achieve more and go far but they are badly in need of career guidance. it's sad that mentoring is not part of our culture and everyone can do his or her own way. kanya kanyang diskarte kung baga. life here maybe is a lot easier than being in other companies so there is really no necessity to be serious about careers. but i believe anyone who dreams big needs to have someone to look up to as his/her goal. to serve as a model, a guide and an inspiration.and that someone must be "real" and reachable.

this morning, i was having a chat with an office friend thru ym and we were exchanging "hinaings". i am fond of her because she seems to have a deeper sense of the world, whatever that means. and she is for me the most beautiful girl in the company, she wears no make up, she looks pretty even in whites, she goes to the gym, she talks with substance and she speaks English really well. she's lamenting that she feels like she is a "highly paid" clerk in this company. I told her its just fine to feel that way. there is no urgent reason to be bibo, after all mediocrity is the name of the game here.

although i don't see my future here anymore, i still hope there will be transformations along the way. its maybe too late but who knows.

beyond expectations

when i was young and still daydreaming of my future, i always painted an image of the person i wanted to end up with.God gave him to me.

when i got pregnant with my first born, i prayed for a son. God gave me my wish.
my second pregnancy was unplanned, so i demanded for a baby girl. i was thinking then that if i would have a girl, competition between the two would be lesser. God gave me a pretty daughter.

i know, i sound funny if i say my third was super unplanned, but it was the truth.we were a pair of "careless parents" who was very clueless on family planning. There was no RH Bill that time :). so when i saw that 2nd line on that kit, i immediately prayed for a baby boy.
I had a theory on my mind that it it would be a boy, my daughter wouldn't have to go through that thing called "middle child" syndrome.again, God was good. I was given a robust baby boy.

when they started going to school, my priority has always been their behavior more than their academic standing.well of course, it makes parents happy and proud to see their children go up the stage to receive honors and distinction and I absolutely salute those hardworking and dedicated moms and dads who push their children to study harder. as a working and "absentee" mother, my  prayers every night is to keep my children safe and healthy.

But God gave me more than what I have been praying for. Last Friday, DJ sent his Papa a text message saying Abi passed the Mathematics Challenge of the Filipino Kids Training Program Qualifying Exam.

can abi make it in the international competition? Again i leave it all to God. as his parents, we are more than happy for the experience that he would get in the 12 session days.also, i am sure this achievement would be helpful in forming his character, in validating his capabilities and skills and of strengthening his self esteem.

neck piece 101

everyday, i become more and more partial to wearing plain shirts. when i see women wearing just plain white shirt hugging nicely on their bodies, i think its sexy.

More frequently when i shop, my tendency is to look for classic white tops. i do the same when i browse the net for the latest fashion blogs - i look for nicely designed white blouses.

when you wear white, you dont have to be boring. in fact, white gives you more freedom to accessorize, and that's what i love the most. you are also allowed to pair it with any shoes, plain or printed, heels or flats. awwww! its definitely heaven!

I am sharing some of my neck pieces. I disposed my old and outdated neck accessories. others may put it into better use.and also, i believe you have to keep your stuff in your closet "moving" that is, when something new comes in, you have to let go of the old and the inactive.

monday blues

every monday is a struggling day for me, except when it falls on a holiday. I feel sluggish and slow in thinking. I also miss home terribly. Five days and four nights are beginning to be too much to handle. Plus work is no longer fun like it used to be. a lot of frustrations around.
To combat this depressing mood, i search for blogs and quotes that would lift my spirit up. When there isn't much choice, we need to build our own defense mechanism so we wont give in.

Like this blog: http://chuvaness.com/page/2/

the blogger went further and added some of her thoughts:

May I also suggest:
1) prayer
2) comfort food
3) watching your favorite TV shows
4) massage
5) hugging your kids
6) ice cream
7) mango shake
8) sleep
9) laughing with friends
10) a blowdry
11) online shopping
12) a trip/going away
13) solitude
14) a good cry
15) talking to a priest
16) charity

You know, whenever I would chance upon blogs like this, I feel hopeful. For me, it means that it is not only me who goes through sadness and disappointments. There are also other people in the world who are not as lucky to be happy all the time, every minute, every second of the day.

Thank you for people like her (chuvaness.com) who shares positive posts like this one.

the eaglets

Last Saturday was hectic. Indeed!

Our schedule:

5:00 am - Fun Run in Alabang
8:00 am - Card Distribution in CSA
3:00 pm - Party of Anjo's classmate
3:30 pm - Grocery

We felt tired already upon imagining our day ahead. pero biglang nawala lahat ng worries at pagod when we got their cards.

Blue Eagle
Kuya may not get a gold eagle but this is the fruit of really hard labor. More push Kuya and you'll get back on track.

Gold eagle.
Anjo has always been a bright girl. she can dance (but her Papa said, "You either study or you dance"), she can write (shhhhhh, she doesn't hide her diary), she is photogenic (lets just say she knows how to project herself) and she wanted to sing (that remains to be heard, though). That's why I always tell her that its rare to be gifted with talent, looks and brains. But what is great about her is she dreams of going to the US for her college education. DREAM BIG!

Gold Eagle.
Abi is a late bloomer. He excelled when he got separated from Anjo. They were classmates in Grade 2, but the teachers told me they will place abi on different section from anjo in Grade 3. They believe Abi can still be  be better. Thank you so much for believing in Abi. he has a strong personality. he goes to his teacher to ask why he gets an "x" for his answer (his Language teacher told us that Abi once appealed bec. of an x mark); he reasons out to his Papa when he thinks his Papa is wrong; he smirks at me when he sees that I am being unfair.

Congratulations hubby for the rewards. This is for you. :) Thank you.

But the sweetest to the ears was when we were told by Anjo's teacher of her observation:
"Ang swerte nyo naman po, ang babait ng mga anak nyo!".

Should I ask for more?

Saturday Fun, Saturday Run

Our second time to join a fun run. The kids were sleepless the night before, esp. Abi who, two years ago, won 3rd  place in the 3k Kids category.

It turned out everyone was competitive.

                                         runners in 3K category.

Anjo was the first girl to finish but didn't get a medal (kids had only one category - over all) and instead got heat rashes :)

DJ was 6th placer but without a medal too (sorry, until 3rd only) and
tadaaannnnnn,

ABI was 3rd Place again!

upon reaching the finish line, organizers were asking him, "who is your dad?". Gasping for breath, he answered, "Dar".

he was ushered to the gatorade booth and there he was asked by the host. "How was the run?" He said, "a little bit hard". :)

when he got off from the stage for the awarding, he immediately looked for his GC. I said maybe later. He again asked "When?". haha.

After the run, we went to a French themed Restaurant for our breakfast.

Abi: I dont like to live in another country.
Me: Why? That would be awesome.
Abi: I dont like their foods.

haha. Kids really say the darndest things!

Love you to bits kiddos.

Another Leaf

I feel like a new student, a transferre from another school. Everything is so new to me. I think I'd get lost anytime. One wrong press and I'm out of here.

But I know I am going to be fine, eventually. But I have to say a proper goodbye to my Multiply home before I  make myself an official resident of this site.

For now, thank you for allowing me to be here.
